As someone who grew up with the Halo franchise, revisiting Halo: Combat Evolved through the Master Chief Collection was an attempt to relive the glory days of one of gaming’s greatest sagas. The excitement of stepping back onto the Pillar of Autumn and experiencing the iconic first-person shooter once again was palpable, but after a few hours of gameplay, I realized something that shocked me: Halo hasn't aged as well as I'd hoped.
While the remastered visuals in Halo: The Master Chief Collection offer a shiny, updated look, they don’t quite mask the game's underlying repetitiveness and outdated level design. Sure, the graphics look nice compared to the original, but it quickly became apparent that Halo: Combat Evolved was a product of its time, with endless corridors, repetitive environments, and an over-reliance on elevators to move the player from one area to the next. While these mechanics were revolutionary back in 2001, they don't stand the test of time.
One of the game's major strengths was its innovative storytelling and its cinematic action, both of which were groundbreaking for the early 2000s. However, the nostalgia of those moments couldn’t compensate for how formulaic and monotonous the gameplay felt. For example, the game’s open landscapes—once so majestic—looked far less impressive through modern eyes, with flat textures and dim lighting that lacked the visual richness we’ve come to expect in today's AAA games.
Even the thrill of piloting a Banshee, which was a standout experience back in the day, felt hollow as I realized the level design didn’t hold up. The joy of flying across the alien ring world quickly turned into a repetitive back-and-forth that lacked the excitement I remembered.
While I won’t deny that the game offers some great moments, especially in the physics department, the Halo: Combat Evolved of today simply doesn't hold up. The Halo shotgun remains the undisputed champion of in-game weapons, and the joy of sticking a plasma grenade to an enemy never gets old. Even the accidental death of Captain Keyes in our co-op playthrough gave us a laugh we’ll never forget. But despite these moments of fun, the core game feels like a relic of the past, and it’s hard not to feel disappointed when you realize that the game hasn’t aged as well as the fond memories would lead you to believe.
In the end, I walked away from my time with Halo: Combat Evolved with mixed emotions. The nostalgia was there, but the gameplay and design left me yearning for something more refined. Perhaps some games are better left in the past, where they can remain untouched by the harsh light of modern gaming standards.
